The Sharon & Greenfield Railroad

This railroad linked the Erie & Pittsburgh Railroad and the Erie Extension Canal near downtown Sharon with the coal fields in central Hickory Township. Winding through Pine Hollow, it was a narrow gauge railway that traced out the same path that Pine Hollow Blvd. and the Shenango Valley Freeway (US 62) take today. In fact, when the original Oakland Street viaduct was constructed in 1904, the railroad still ran underneath it. Records are vague about when the Sharon & Greenfield ceased operations, but it's probably safe to say that it had stopped running by the 1930's, the right-of-way having been replaced by Pine Hollow Blvd.
